Roy Wilkins (August 30, 1901 – September 8, 1981) was a prominent civil rights activist in the United States from the 1930s to the 1970s. Born Aug. 30, 1901, in St. Louis, Missouri, of struggling African American parents, Roy Wilkins received his bachelor of arts degree from the University of Minnesota in 1923. Wilkins, from the old school of thought, firmly believed in integration and nonviolence and was criticized for being too cautious and old-fashioned. 1901-1981 Roy Wilkins rose through the ranks of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People to become one of history’s most articulate and impassioned advocates for achieving equal rights through the legislative process. It was the zenith of protest, radicalism, freedom train rides, marches, and demonstrations. Under the plan, black businesses and voluntary associations shifted their accounts to the black-owned Tri-State Bank of Memphis, Tennessee. Roy Wilkins was a prominent activist in the Civil Rights Movement in the United States from the 1930s to the 1970s. When W. E. B. Under his leadership, the NAACP was instrumental in enacting the key civil rights legislation of the era. The winner of the NAACP's Spingarn Medal in 1964, and the recipient of many other awards, including over fifty honorary degrees, Wilkins died in September 1981. At his funeral in New York City, hundreds of mourners, black and white, remembered him as a man who refused to bend to fashion.In 1931 Wilkins became assistant executive secretary at NAACP National Headquarters. Wilkins never groomed a successor for his job and refused until 1976 even to court the idea of retirement.
When he finally did leave his post in 1977, he was more or less forced to do so by the board of directors, who accused him off-the-record of mismanaging funds.
