Prusik Cord: Size. Besides, then what would we all talk about when we got together?Left to right: The Schwaebisch, Distal and Michoacán, three basic closed climbing hitches with arrows to illustrate how they are tied. Prusik Cord: Size. Many factors affect knots including: the appropriateness of knots and rope materials used in particular applications, the age, size, and condition of ropes; and the accuracy with which these descriptions have been followed. NebClimber. The lines should exit the Tautline from opposite sides in the middle of the hitch. Where failure could cause property damage, injury, or death, seek professional instruction prior to use. Not a big deal if you’re aware of it, are careful to dress the hitch nicely and keep it from getting bunched up with use.The tensile strength of accessory cord varies significantly depending on the manufacturer and diameter but in general falls in the 7 – 10 kN range for 6.0 – 7.0 mm cord. This hitch is called a two-wrap, four-coil Prusik. There are a lot of 8mm sewn prusik cords around but these are designed to be used with 11mm static ropes which are more common in organized rescue, rope access, etc.A prusik hitch is an invaluable tool when rock climbing, traveling across glaciers, climbing ropes, etc. Too thick and the opposite happens, the hitch doesn’t want to grab and more wraps are required. The Jammy comes in three lengths: 35cm, 50cm and 60cm and has a breaking strength of 22kN.
The diameter of your cord should be 60% to 80% of the rope’s diameter, whether you are using the prusik on one rope or two. Match up the prusik diameter with your climbing line: 5/16" prusiks will work with 7/16" ropes, 3/8" for 1/2", and 9mm prusiks will work with either. line against 11-13 mm host life support lines and forms a "closed system".
The hitch is formed by making one turn around the climbing line in a downward direction, and then taking the end of the eye and eye tail or piece of cordage up above the original turn and making four more turns around the standing part of the line in a downward direction, going around the climbing rope in the same as the original turn. ... you should upgrade to the 90's with an eye-to-eye and go with a distel, schwabisch or VT to replace the old-school split tail. It appears to be identical in structure to a knot described by Ashley for hoisting a spar.
Three commonly seen examples of open climbing hitches are the Tautline, Prusik and Blake’s.Even if, as a climber, you have never been in that particular position, your climbing hitch is a choice that affects your well-being almost every day and in every way.
After all, 50 feet up is not the time to discover the new “best hitch ever” seems to creep copiously. The Distal is tied in a similar fashion to the Schwabisch, with one key difference. Thanks, Steven .
I've never heard about the Distel Hitch before.
Many knots are not suitable for the risks involved in climbing. In general you want about a 3mm difference between the diameter of the rope you’re using and the accessory cord material but don’t really want to go much thinner than 5.5 to 6mm.
Both ends are then secured to the connecting link, either through the use of spliced/stitched eyes or with appropriate attachment knots. In what can seem to be direct conflict with security is the need for the hitch to be fairly easy to use.

They are made using ABS filament, and these are non-weight bearing. Set 1 contains Hitch Climber, 2 DMM Oval biners, and 5/16" Ocean prusik. Photo: Michael TainClimbing hitches, by their very nature, need to be secure and reliable. It does focus a great deal of friction on one specific point, which can result in glazing on long, fast descents. The Tautline is probably one of the most commonly used climbing hitches in North America and has been around since the days of natural fiber ropes.
However, there are a range of options when it comes to prusik material and of course each has its strengths and weaknesses. There are two different design’s available based on the friction hitch …
In fact, on four of the drop tests the test mass hit the ground. as a symmetrical 3/3 Prusik hitch as well as an asymmetrical 4/1 Schwabisch hitch produced longer stopping distances. If there’s a large eye at the bend it won’t grab well, keep shopping.
