So let’s write a short story together! We'vealready discussed the length of the work as being one of the maindifferences between a short story and a novel. However, that is not theonly difference between the two. A novel is not simply a series ofshort stories strung together. It must have a cumulative effect to thereader and a series of climaxes that all point to the final climax inthe book. The novel must lead a reader down a path, taking them on upsand downs along the way. Each scene is inevitably tied to the one thatfollows. Every climax is written to prepare the reader for what happensnext. It builds tension, curiosity, interest, and anticipation. Whilethe novel may contain several twists and turns in the plot, every bitof it is written to get us to that final climax where everything we'veread comes together and the story ends.Alot of amateur writers make the mistake of thinking that they can breakthe rules and get away with it. They believe that they can write thestory that everyone else says can't be written – and write it well. Yes, that means there are writers out there right now – maybe even oneswho are taking this course – who are thinking to themselves that theycan put plot twists into a short story and still have a high qualitystory. However, all they do is mark themselves as amateurs, and theynever advance into great short story writing. Nowthat we understand the differences between a novel and a short story,let's examine the elements of the short story as compared to the noveland why each one is important to creating a well-written, higher qualitytale.
