Just to confuse things, GoPro was also offering a ‘Dusk White’ version of the GoPro Hero 7 Black earlier this year as a limited edition. In short, whichever generation or color you choose, these pocket-sized cameras are regularly held up as being perfect for cyclists, skiers, skateboarders and more adventurous types wanting to capture imagery in ways that wouldn’t previously have been considered possible. While it’s clear that the GoPro Hero 7 Black is the current top dog amongst its siblings, the White and Silver versions of the same are also well worth checking out. The Black also has one of its three microphones on top. Both the Black and the Silver are quite capable cameras for shooting photos. While it may not offer the full majesty of 4K-resolution video, we’ve previously described its 1080P footage as looking ‘glorious’ nonetheless, as we get up to 60P capture, and this level of spec will no doubt suit most users. On the Silver, it saves as a 4K MP4 file. Because it’s small, it inevitably also isn’t the easiest LCD for those with larger fingers to navigate.YouTube-rs and Facebook Live fans will also love the GoPro Hero 7 Black’s live streaming capabilities with 720p output – being the first GoPro camera to feature such live-streaming facilities – said footage being backed up to the camera’s provided microSD card slot. There’s a new TimeWarp Video mode that works well when the camera is moving. Something worth noting in that regard is that you can record while the camera is connected via USB-C to a power source–and that can be used to keep the camera powered up for longer shoots such as doing a time-lapse—but it won’t be charging the battery while you’re actually recording. It analyzes the image and tries to use HDR, local tone mapping, or multi-frame noise reduction to help improve the capture and produce a processed image that should look better than a straight capture. The Black has the option to shoot in RAW. It achieves this by automatically deploying the likes of high dynamic range (HDR), tone mapping and noise reduction. Please refresh the page and try again. All three of our GoPro options here feature a toughened build that makes them fit for their rough and tumble image-taking purpose. On the Black, you can save it as a 4K, 2.7K, 1440p, or 1080p file, in addition to being able to shoot in Time-lapse Photo mode to save the sequence of individual image files. Both cameras can shoot time-lapse, and both can compile the time-lapse video in the camera, saving it as an MP4 file. But on the other hand, it’s sometimes nice to know they’re there and there’s a degree of future proofing built-in, if and when needed. There’s also a NightLapse mode that is time-lapse with longer shutter speeds and a related slightly different way of approaching intervals.Despite those similarities, there are some differences in their basic design and build. The fact that it is also a touch screen means that navigating available features is fairly intuitive. That’s also true with the Black. They have the same shutter / record start/stop button on top.
Here’s the full list of Protune options available on the HERO7 Black. The Black shoots photos that result in 12MP (12 megapixel) images that measure 4000 by 3000 pixels. At left is the HERO7 Black, with the Silver at right. The overall design and look of the menu systems are the same between these two models and has been tweaked since the HERO6 camera. So you can expect similar recording times if you put them in the same recording modes. It also records sound via a two-microphone set up rather than three microphones of that premium model, but, while there is some image stabilization functionality on board, we don’t get the full ‘fat’ 3-axis HyperSmooth anti shake functionality of its Black brethren.
Naturally, with fewer features available, the menu system on the Silver is somewhat simplified, but they’re conceptually the same. But it’s not always clear what the differences are between the models. And a bunch of places in between. So which should you get?
Also worth a mention is its SuperPhoto feature which claims to reduce instances of image noise in shots.©Future US, Inc. 11 West 42nd Street, 15th Floor,New York,NY 10036.Thank you for signing up to Digital Camera World. Like the GoPros that have gone before, neither of them has what you’d call stellar battery life—an hour or two of filming in ideal conditions and substantially less than that in less-than-ideal conditions.
The tweaks are overall an improvement–I find it clearer and easier to use–but it’s still not perfect. In short, there’s no point in paying extra for features you may never use.
