Vermicomposting was tried on this segregated solid waste using exotic species of earthworm--Eudrilus eugeniae--commonly called 'African Night Crawler'. So far we could only find suppliers of African nightcrawlers in the USA and Africa. I had read about these "hybread, or African" red worms, and was led to beleave, they were hard to raise, would wander off, and they couldent survive the cold. Coffee pulp is the main solid residue from the wet processing of coffee berries. A study was conducted to evaluate the efficiency of an exotic (Eudrilus eugeniae) and a native earthworm (Perionyx ceylanesis) from coffee farm for decomposition of coffee pulp into valuable vermicompost. The percentage of nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, calcium and magnesium in vermicompost was found to increase while C:N ratio, pH and total organic carbon declined as a function of the vermicomposting. The plant nutrients, nitrogen (80.6%), phosphorus (292%) and potassium (550%) content found to increase significantly in the vermicompost produced using native earthworms as compared to the initial values, while the calcium (85.7%) and magnesium (210%) content found to increase significantly in compost produced utilizing exotic worms.
Eudrilus eugeniae (Kinberg) is the commonly type of earthworms used for vermicomposting in tropical and subtropical countries 1.
Recent stringent measures by Pollution Control authorities, made it mandatory to treat all the solid and liquid waste emanating from the coffee farms. Information on prospective metal remediation by Eudrilus eugeniae during vermicomposting of cotton textile sludge (CTS) is rather scarce.
5 ml of diesel was contaminated into soils in replicates and inoculated with E. eugeniae for 90 days. This investigation, therefore, evaluates the sanitization efficiency of this species in CTS and CTS + cow-dung (CD) based feedstocks against aerobic composting. Commercial vermicomposting is reported to be practicable for treatment and disposal of many organic solids and byproducts in agricultural production and processing industries. However, this alternative has not been tried for MSW on large scale. Characteristics of solid waste were monitored through conventional parameters and additional environmental parameters like BOD5 and COD. Exotic earthworms were found to degrade the coffee pulp faster (112 days) as compared to the native worms (165 days) and the vermicomposting efficiency (77.9%) and vermicompost yield (389 kg) were found to significantly higher with native worms. You obviously know that Eudrilus eugeniae, enjoys a warm climate and is therefore difficult to breed in the colder countries of Europe.
