She said ticket sales at the Powerhouse had been down over the past 12 months but that couldn't all be directly attributed to the poor parking situation.Brisbane City Council says it has a plan to deal with “peak parking” around the Powerhouse complex, by allowing evening traffic through New Farm Park.“And that particular night by the time I realised that my partner would not be coming with me because he was too sick I'd missed my window of opportunity to use public transport.”Ms Gemmola said she took her personal security very seriously ever since being chased by a group of youths in a car while walking in Victoria several years ago.Ms Gemmola also flagged the idea of shuttle buses to and from the Powerhouse and key stops such as Brunswick Street Station and Central Station.Councillor Krista Adams, the chair of Brisbane Lifestyle Committee which oversees city venues, said the situation was a Catch-22.Councillor Adams said it was an impact-assessable application and locals would have a chance to make submissions.“There are some people who still don't know yet what a great venue the Powerhouse is and also you find at the moment the disposable spend on entertainment is tighter.”Comedy producer Kelli Gemmola has garnered Facebook support after being fined $100 for parking partway across a yellow line in a residential street.Councillor Adams said a development application was currently lodged with Council about opening up an exit from the Powerhouse car park into the New Farm Park roundabout, which patrons could then use for parking.She said the alternative had been to park more than a kilometre away.“Do I park a long way away and risk something happening, or do I take the chance, park closer and get a fine?,” she said.“We get that in a lot of places, such as people who move near schools and don't realise what 3 o'clock is like, we get it when people move into the Valley and forget that nightclubs go late in the evening,” she said.Natalie Bochenski is a reporter for Brisbane Times.“It'll be a one way option with a boom gate that the Powerhouse will be in control of, which will be opened in the evenings and shut down at the end of their last function at night,” she said.“People can exit out through the park even from the Powerhouse car park and up Brunswick Street, so we're actually taking the cars out of Lamington Street totally.”It follows complaints during the recent Brisbane Comedy Festival of increased problems finding parking spaces around the venue.“I'm more than happy to put that forward to the Powerhouse board but it is a commercial business and they'd have to make sure it was viable,” said Councillor Adams.“That still gives me the heebie-jeebies, which is why at the Powerhouse I was really conscious of finding somewhere to park where I would feel comfortable enough to walk,” she said.“But if it is approved we're expecting we will be able to get this underway in the second half of this year.”Ms Gemmola said she felt like she was being presented with a lose-lose situation.But for Ms Gemmola that involved a three hour round trip from her home in Ferny Hills.“I drove around the Powerhouse for 20 minutes looking for a park, and thought, this is ridiculous, there's no way I'm going to park so far away and walk alone through New Farm,” she said.“The Powerhouse is very popular but it is a heritage building in a heritage park and there is restricted parking,” she said.“But we do need to work at a balance.”She said the bulk of complaints came not from patrons but residents around Lamington Street – even though the Powerhouse was there before homes were built.“I'm more than happy to pay for parking, that's the way it is but there's no choice for parking at the Powerhouse.”Councillor Adams also said people should double check public transport options including CityCats.
