Kodak Ektar is an ISO 100 colour negative film that, as you might expect following that claim about its grain, sits firmly in the company’s Professional range. I even find the slightly ruddy skin tones suit tanned (or sunburnt) subjects, making them appear slightly more so and thus evoking scenes in a manner perhaps closer to our memory of them than to reality.After shooting 13 rolls of Kodak Portra 400 I thought it was time to give Ektar a try, as was suggested by some people who read my previous posts. So you over compensate by scanning darker and then de contrasting the blacks. In fact the majority of the world is not white. My hope is it it renders you with an idea on the capability of 2 different films. The Ektar photos also seem to have a hint of red haze over them. might regret it some day.Aaaaaah, those colors….. do not tempt me!!

Architecture has the requirement for detail, the leading lines, colour and an interesting building and may bring different ideas or reflections that more common scenarios. There are no rules here, but generally speaking, for landscapes it is best to leave highlights unclipped and allow the shadows to fade into total blackness, creating a very dramatic effect. I have tried to capture these elements within my local area and provide the results united for your comparison.Deciding to compare Ektar and Portra was quite exciting, as I had never shot Ektar before but hard heard about its reputation. We were only in Greece for three days, so I more or less shot one day with Ektar, and one day with Portra. It came with film in it .
Ads Enabled. Like slide film, it's fussy about exposure, where Portra 160 is forgiving (huge dynamic range). Skin tones are a weak point of Ektar 100. I set my incident meter to 400 and stick it in the shadow to get a quick reading and then shoot from there.
You can buy black and white film, slide film, Polaroid packs, infrared film, and a number of specialist films not available anywhere else - perfect as gifts for analogue photographers! I have noticed however that I like the results I get with Portra 400 in my Minolta Riva Panorama, which shoots at box since I can’t be bothered to change the DX code on my film. Please remember this camera is fully manual with no meter, so I’ve had to rely on my eyes.

Again with a cloudy day, you can see much less saturation in the colours.For this one I was walking around the small town of Gainsborough and wanted to use the new modern feel and look of supermarkets. I just wish there was a 400 colour film out there that was a bit nicer than Fuji Superia and a bit cheaper than Portra.The only thing you don’t want to do with any film is underexpose as you just can’t recover the shadows that much.Thanks! Between haze and fungus marks, I’m quite surprised and impress by the results. Skin tones look neutral and natural which not always the case (wink wink Ektar)You should try at ISO 400. If you would to develop the negs the old fashioned way and project the neg light onto photo paper.
